Yesterday was a beautiful day in Ottawa – 26 degrees, and not a butt in the sky. When a friend and I went out for a bite to eat, she inquired about my new position at bv02. Oh yeah, I’m new, by the way. My name is Nicole, and I’m the new web content writer and social media strategist. I am absolutely delighted to have the pleasure of working with such intelligent and creative individuals, but I digress.

After explaining a bit about bv02, and about a recent article I had read in the Ottawa Citizen, we got into a discussion about social media. My friend feels that meeting people isn’t as organic as it used to be. Valid. In the past, you would meet someone and try and get to know him or her personally – You only knew what they would tell you and vice versa. Also valid. It was like opening a new book for the first time and anticipating the next chapter.

Nowadays, you meet someone and with a few strokes of the keyboard… You have access to their name, age, date of birth, occupation, who their friends are, who their siblings are, what they did last night, and the list goes on.

So maybe not everyone is as crazy about social media as we are – yet. As as a recent journalism graduate, I am fascinated with social media and using its tools to connect people. Real-time communication platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have the ability to spread word faster than a story is printed. It also allows you to build lasting relationships with like-minded individuals, and gives individuals a voice in the online community. That’s pretty awesome.

Face-to-face interaction is still powerful just as much as it is important. But today’s society is all about ease and access. Sure, it’s nice to get to know someone over a cup of coffee. But why not skip the small talk, and get right down to business?

Thanks to social media, I feel like I’ve worked with my colleagues at bv02 for months, and I’m quite enjoying it.
