Ideas vs Process

Aug052009

Riddle me this…..where does process stop and the person begin? Or vice versa (I’ve confused myself already…not a good start). At what point does process smother the individual’s creativity? Let a highly creative person loose and you can just lock the door and turn out the lights. The project is never going to end, so the best you can do is try and contain the leak to make sure other projects don’t get infected. On the other hand, make things utterly process driven and you’ll spend hours building paper clip necklaces to help alleviate the boredom.

In most walks of life people would tell me that the question is moot. That it is something to be discussed around the campfire once the ‘is there life on other planets’ subject has been beaten to death and your kid brother has drunkenly fallen out of his lawn chair. But when you manage a digital marketing company like ours it’s a line you have to walk closely. If you are a competitor to bv02 and you are highly process driven there’s a good chance I’ll eat your lunch (unless the client is selecting based only on price, in which case I’ll walk away anyway). However, if we, bv02, swing too far in the creative direction, we’ll lose our shirts. At the end of the day clients are paying for both ideas and process and the mix is unique for each client. It’s a fine line to walk. Especially for a big man.
