Connecting the Office Through Music

Jun182012

I’m sure that in any digital creative studio, you’ll find a lot of really interesting people with a lot of really diverse tastes in music. Whenever the bv02 office is quiet, I know two things are happening: some serious work is getting done, and some great songs are being listened to. This is why I’ve been trying to push Rdio on everyone in the office.

Rdio is a streaming music service similar to Grooveshark or Spotify but yes, it does cost money. $5 a month gets you access to millions of songs and allows you to follow what your friends or in this case, coworkers, are listening to. Rdio has a great interface and once you start playing with it, you’ll see how much thought they put into design. No wonder all the big names in web are on Rdio, which you’ll see once you add your Twitter contacts. What songs get them pumped to make websites in the morning? Now you know.

Everyone has a song that can wake them up, help them concentrate or improve their mood. This is the soundtrack to those personal dance parties we end up having in the office and to the websites we build, and I wanted to know what songs were inspiring the head-bobbing and web-developing. To find out, I bought 6 people at bv02 $10 Rdio gift cards in hopes that the trend might spread. So far the response has been great; as of now our own Brandon, Paul, Justin, Ryan and Mr. St. Pierre have been using the service and it’s been awesome to see what everyone is listening to. We’ve even started a collaborative bv02 playlist.

So, go sign up for the free trial and add us.  (Not following the office on Twitter?  We have a list for that.) If you’re not convinced, read more about Rdio’s features. You can download the Mac app as well.

We can’t wait to see what songs inspire you to make websites or do a crazy office dance.

Great post Matt, Much better than grooveshark in my mind. Looking forward to getting your playlists. Hope we can line up some “progRock” on this app.
