OC Transpo

Nov172009

OC Transpo provides comprehensive transit services to nearly million people in Ottawa. Their fleet has over 1000 buses and 3 trains that serve close to 370,000 daily riders. Their web site receives 17,000 visitors each day as people seek transit schedules and routing updates. The challenge OC Transpo faced was that its site had been built in 1996 and was unable to properly leverage new media and mobile technology as effectively as the organization, and its ridership, desired.

bv02 worked closely with the OC Transpo team to frame, plan, design and develop a site that better disseminated content, was more easily managed and offered the ‘Web 2.0’ features that people were looking for. The result is that navigating Ottawa’s bus system has become easier. Octranspo.com now offers a quick version of its travel planner on every page, along with route timetables. New functions include a Google map lookup of bus stops and departure times, daily service updates, such as route detours, an updated community events listing and a site search function. Riders can also sign up for mobile alerts, which will give customers immediate information about trip cancellations and route detours.

As part of the testing and rollout, bv02 used Get Satisfaction to solicit user feedback and tracked comments posted on Twitter to ensure that the new design and functionality were resonating with transit users. Services provided by bv02 for this wonderful project include; strategy, wireframes, design, photography, content planning, video, technical development (with partner Mercury Grove), technical support and project management.
