Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

The mission of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is to protect and promote the privacy rights of individuals. With technology now affecting every aspect of modern life, there has never been a more important time to think about your privacy, and to safeguard it against a broadening range of threats. OPC partnered with bv02 to create the Deep Packet Inspection website to serve as a resource on deep packet inspection. The website grew out of a desire at OPC to understand more about a technology that has application in network traffic management, behavioural advertising, and law enforcement. The website presents the works of leading academics and professionals working in telecommunications, law, privacy, civil liberties and computer science. bv02 developed a successful strategy that took advantage of many levels of social media to encourage discussion around deep packet inspection and similar technologies. Within the first day of launching the site, bv02 tracked over 400 diggs on digg.com and OPC’s deep packet inspection site became the highest digg under the Technology category on that day. Twitter became a hub of activity for people tweeting the successful launch of the site and commenting on its content.
